Leaf Peeping

If you’re interested in taking in the beauty of the fall foliage, you’ll have lots of opportunities in the state of Missouri! There are lots of natural areas and forests that visitors can enjoy, and you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the changing leaves throughout the season. You can start with the Mina Sauk Falls Trail, located in the Taum Sauk Mountain State Park. This trail is fairly easy to hike, but it has some major payoffs when it comes to views. Not only can you take in panoramic views of the valley below, but you can also see the Mina Sauk Falls at the midpoint of this three-mile loop! This is the perfect trail to get some fresh air and exercise, without having to prepare for a full-on hike. You can also bring dogs as long as they stay on a leash!

Fall Hiking Spots

For the more experienced hiker, Missouri has tons of trails that are suitable for all skill levels! Fall is a great time for hiking, because the air is cool and crisp, without being so cold that you have to bundle up. A cool breeze can be the perfect reprieve after working up a sweat on the mountain. One trail that advanced hikers might want to try is the Whispering Pines Trail, located just outside of Farmington, Missouri. This trail takes roughly four and a half hours to complete, totaling about 11 miles. Along the way, there are also various sites where you can set up camp, and spend the night. For something a bit easier, but still a good workout, check out the River Scene Trail Loop, a 3.1-mile loop with tons of beautiful scenery!

Apple Orchards

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the spirit of fall is to go apple picking! Again, this is a great way to enjoy the fresh air, and it’s also an activity that will keep the whole family entertained. Plus, you can make tons of delicious fall recipes with the apples you pick. There are many different apple orchards and farms throughout the state of Missouri, and you can visit one, or many, throughout the season! One beloved spot is West Orchards in Macon, Missouri. This orchard has pick-your-own apples, as well as plums, apricots, and pears. Depending on when you visit, you can find many different seasonal fruits. The orchard also produces hand-pressed cider throughout the fall apple season.
