What Engines Does the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Offer?

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler rolls out of the factory with one standard engine, while three others are available for your choosing. Standard underneath the hood of the legendary Wrangler is a 3.6-liter V6 engine that gives drivers 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 engine is available, kicking out 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Another more powerful option is exclusive to the Rubicon 392 trim. This comes with a potent 6.4L HEMI V8 that rips out an exhilarating 470 horsepower and a matching 470 lb-ft of torque. The last available Wrangler engine is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) system that Jeep calls 4xe, short for “four-by-electric.” The Wrangler 4xe lineup uses a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine for gas power and two electric motors powered by a 400-volt rechargeable battery pack for electric power. This system gives the Wrangler 4xe 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque while maintaining the gas equivalent of 49 MPG. The Wrangler is the last of a dying breed, coming standard with a 6-speed manual transmission on most trims, while an 8-speed automatic transmission is optional. However, the V8 and hybrid models come standard with automatic transmission. All Jeep Wrangler’s come standard with Command-Trac 4×4, while Selec-Trac is optional for some trim levels, and Rock-Trac is exclusive to the Rubicon.

Can you tell me about the Wrangler’s 4×4 systems?

The Wrangler’s off-road capability is the stuff that legends are made of, and that capability begins with three legendary 4×4 systems. Standard equipment, as we mentioned above, is Command-Trac 4×4. Command-Trac is a part-time 4×4 system that puts drivers in control by allowing them to choose between three gearings; 2WD, 4-HI, and 4-LO. While two-wheel drive should be used on smooth, dry roads to save fuel and reduce wear on the transfer case, 4-High should be used in inclement weather or during light off-roading. Meanwhile, 4-Low is geared for heavy off-roading and low-speed crawling. Selec-Trac is available to some Wrangler trim levels and puts the vehicle in control of the torque distribution. Selec-Trac automatically switches between 2WD on smooth roads and 4WD on loose gravel or other inclement driving conditions. The Rubicon comes exclusively with Rock-Trac 4×4. This also uses driver input to alter torque distribution. However, with a lower gear ratio, the Rock-Trac transfer case is ideal for extreme off-roading and low-speed rock crawling.

What Features Can I Expect from the 2023 Wrangler Lineup?

The Wrangler’s design is so iconic for two main reasons. First is the open-air freedom that owners get from the removable top and doors and fold-down windshield. The second is the timeless seven-slot grille and round headlights found at the front fascia since the Wrangler’s very first model year, a design that dates back to 1941 when Willys developed the Jeep MB for the U.S. Army. Today, the Wrangler also features 17-inch steel wheels, underbody skid plates, a zipperless soft top, black mirrors, front and rear tow hooks, black fender flares, and Dana 44 solid axles. Inside, you’ll find easy-washout drain valves, cloth upholstery, six speakers, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, and push-button start. When you opt for a higher Wrangler trim level, you get even more like power windows and door locks, LED lighting, alloy wheels, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, navigation, body-color exterior finishes, and much more.
